Hey everyone! Can you believe it’s already July? I would like to fill you all in on the ongoing activities of the Texas Coastal Bend Blues Society since the last newsletter.
Since our last newsletter, here are some highlights:
Mrs. Googamuck and the Hip Replacements, a member Blues band, headlined the final day of the 2nd Annual Fish Fest at Conn Brown Harbor in Aransas Pass. A great annual event by our friends at D&A Productions, that also puts on the Annual Salsa Festival, which was headlined on its final day by our member band, The FBI Blues Band back in November.
Scott Graham, our Treasurer, did an excellent job with the Bayside Music Festival. The line up included Scott’s band, The Bayside Volunteer Jam Band, Melissa Ann Grothe, Kimberly Waitrek-Dougherty and Friends did a Gospel set and Mrs. Googamuck and the Hip Replacements closed out the day of music. The festival was a fundraiser for the Bayside Volunteer Fire Dept and it brought in much appreciated funds for the Fire Dept in that small coastal community.
The 3rd Annual Jak Payne Waterfront Festival returned to our member venue, Dorado’s, for the second year in a row one June 28th. The 8-band line up was opened by the Bayside Volunteer Jam Band on the Hambone Stage (Named after our late friend and TCBBS Treasurer, Mario “Hambone” Lopez), followed by TKO on the Jak Payne Stage. After they killed it, Mantle Jennings played the Hambone stage, and they had an excellent set. Then Reno Perez and his fantastic blues trio had the big tent jumpin’ on the Jak Payne Stage. After Reno, the amazing cotton patch blues band “Spit Cup and the Jukes” performed on the Hambone Stage. They came down form the San Antonio area after recently playing the Clarksdale Blues Festival in Mississippi.
The final 3 bands all played the Jak Payne Stage, which included the Palacios Brothers, the John Cortez band and the Chris Duarte Group. All three were phenomenal. Brian Palacios, John Cortez and Chris Duarte all jammed the last song together and it was worth being there 12 hours just to witness that!
Clawson’s Music donated a really nice guitar and believe it or not, Brian Palacios won it and played it during that epic jam at the end!
On July 19th the TCBBS is having a car/bike/drag boat show with live blues from 10-5 pm at Dorado’s. Wish us luck as we pull off our first event of this type! Dorado’s has a great full bar and awesome food and they are kid and pet friendly, so we hope you all can make it to support the blues at this free event. The poster can be seen on our EVENTS page. Just go to the menu above to find it.
Also, congratulations to Alma Merchant for becoming our new Secretary, which is a corporate board position!
Frank Butler (myself), John Cortez and Scott Graham all were re-elected to serve another term.
Finally, thanks to all that joined and thanks to all that renewed their commitment to be members of the TCBBS. Please tell your friends to join as well. We are striving to do more events and need your support to help keep the blues alive!
Thank Again,
Frank Butler
President.
